From Headlamp to Trailer Plug: Full-Scale Vehicle Lighting Training with Real Components

Wiring a lighting circuit on a trainer board is one thing. Wiring a complete vehicle lighting system with original automotive components, proper terminal designations, and switchable real-world faults is something else entirely.
A Training System That Builds Like a Real Vehicle

The THEPRA T-Varia system is built around a straightforward idea: automotive training works best when students interact with the same components, circuits, and wiring conventions they will encounter in the field. Rather than simplified stand-ins or scaled-down representations, T-Varia puts original OEM parts on a modular panel system that assembles into a fully functional vehicle electrical ecosystem.
Each T-Varia panel covers a specific system area: front lighting, controls, rear lighting, trailer. Panels mount to a mobile aluminum cart and connect to each other using workshop-standard safety cables. Students can work on individual panels in isolation or build up to the complete system progressively, adding complexity as their skills develop. The same cart supports both the lighting package covered here and the engine management package covered in a separate spotlight, making it a flexible investment for programs that want to grow their training capability over time.
This modular architecture is what sets T-Varia apart from fixed-panel trainers. Instructors can configure the system to match exactly what they are teaching that week, and programs can expand the system with additional panels rather than replacing equipment as curriculum grows.
What the T-Varia Lighting Package Includes
The T-Varia Lighting starter set covers the complete vehicle lighting circuit, front to rear, including a functional trailer connection. The system includes four panels:
T-Varia Front Lighing

• Front Lighting: dual headlamps (H7 high beam, H4 low beam), fog lights with free-form reflectors, daytime running lights and indicators in LED, and an electronic horn, all in original automotive design
T-Varia Controls

• Controls: ignition lock, light switch, steering column switch with indicator and high/low beam function, hazard warning, fuse boxes, and a lockable fault switch box with 20 switchable faults
T-Varia Rear Lighting

• Rear Lighting: modern LED tail lights with brake, indicator, number plate, fog, and reversing light functions, plus a 13-pin trailer socket
T-Varia Trailer

• Trailer: a full trailer lighting panel with left and right tail light assemblies covering all trailer lighting functions, connected via a matching trailer plug
Every component carries DIN 72552 terminal designations with schematic printing directly on the panel, so students are learning the industry-standard labeling system as they work, not a simplified classroom substitute. All connections are in 4mm and 6mm safety versions, compatible with workshop-standard measuring instruments.
20 Switchable Faults Built for Diagnosis Training
Knowing how a circuit works is only part of what technicians need. The ability to diagnose a fault efficiently, without replacing parts unnecessarily, is what separates a competent technician from an experienced one. The T-Varia Controls panel includes a lockable fault switch box with 20 individually selectable faults that can be inserted into the circuit without the student knowing where to look.
Faults can also be combined with the integrated fault circuit of the Controls panel, allowing instructors to create compound fault scenarios that mirror the ambiguous, multi-cause problems technicians encounter in real shop environments. Students practice using multimeters and workshop measuring tools to locate faults through voltage measurement and partial voltage methods, interpreting real signal values rather than simulated readouts.
Each panel comes with didactically prepared documentation including task worksheets and solution guides for both students and instructors. A 123-page manual supports the full lighting package.
How the T-Varia Lighting Package Maps to ASE A6
The ASE A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems certification covers a broad range of body electrical competencies, with lighting systems representing a core diagnostic area. The T-Varia Lighting Package supports hands-on skill development across several key A6 task areas:
Lighting Systems Diagnosis and Repair (A6 Task Area F)
Students wire, operate, and diagnose the full range of vehicle lighting circuits, including headlamps, fog lights, brake lights, indicators, reversing lights, and trailer lighting. Working with original components under real circuit conditions means the measurement values, fault symptoms, and diagnostic logic they encounter are identical to what they will see in a shop.
Circuit Wiring, Diagrams, and Schematic Reading (A6 Task Area A)
Every T-Varia panel is printed with circuit diagrams and DIN 72552 terminal symbols, requiring students to interpret schematics and assign terminal designations as part of the wiring process. This directly builds the circuit reading skills tested throughout the A6 task list.
Electrical Test Equipment and Measurement (A6 Task Area B)
Students select and use workshop-standard multimeters and test equipment to locate faults, measure voltage drops, and evaluate signals against manufacturer specifications. The 20 switchable faults create the diagnostic pressure needed to develop real measurement discipline, not just familiarity with the tools.
Trailer and Accessory Electrical Systems (A6 Task Area G)
The inclusion of a functional 13-pin trailer socket and full trailer lighting panel is an often-overlooked differentiator. Students wire and diagnose the complete trailer circuit, covering an area that regularly generates customer complaints in real shop environments and is specifically addressed in the A6 task list.
Available in the US Through EdTech Global
The T-Varia Lighting Package is part of the broader THEPRA T-Varia Connect system, a modular training platform developed over decades of collaboration between automotive teaching professionals and engineers. THEPRA’s full catalog, including the T-Varia lighting and engine management systems, is now available in the United States through EdTech Global.
