Teaching HV Deactivation Procedures That Could Save a Life


Before a student diagnoses a single high-voltage fault, the system has to be off. Truly off. Verified off, with the right tools, in the right order, with documentation that proves it. That sequence is not a preliminary step. It is the procedure where a mistake does not mean a failed assignment. It means an injury, or worse.

This is the part of EV training that has to come first. Not the part that gets squeezed in at the end of a unit on diagnostics. Every student who is going to work on a hybrid or electric vehicle needs to know how to shut the system down safely before anything else they learn matters.

The Lock-out Trainer 2.0 is a compact laboratory trainer focused on one critical workflow: the safe deactivation of a high-voltage vehicle. Students work through the full four-step protocol that every HV procedure depends on. Disconnect, using any of several manufacturer methods.


Secure against reconnection. Verify the absence of voltage. Document each step.

What makes the trainer different is that students do this work on a platform built to look and behave like the real thing while staying safe to handle. The voltage is reduced ten to one. The LCD reads 400 volts while only 40 volts is actually present at the test points. The system includes an original maintenance plug, a base that locks with a padlock, and a measurable pilot line. The hardware students touch is the hardware they will see in the bay.


The trainer also covers insulation testing and equipotential bonding measurements using workshop-standard test equipment. These are the two measurements that confirm an HV system is safe to work on. They are not optional skills in a modern shop, and they are not something a student can practice on a whiteboard. A built-in special mode lets the trainer simulate the charging and discharging process, so students can see and measure what is actually happening inside an HV system between de-energization and confirmed-safe.


The Lock-out Trainer 2.0 also walks students through accident and rescue scenarios, training them on how to respond when something goes wrong, not only how to follow procedure when everything goes right.

Mapped to ASE L3 safety procedure tasks


The L3 Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Specialist certification has grown into one of the most in-demand credentials in automotive education. A meaningful portion of the L3 task list addresses safety: the procedures for disabling and re-enabling HV systems, insulation resistance testing, equipotential bonding verification, and the proper use of personal protective equipment.


The Lock-out Trainer 2.0 maps to these tasks directly. It is the platform on which students build the procedural muscle memory the test expects, without the cost or the risk of training on a live vehicle.
